What is fascia and soffit?

FAQ's Category: Soffit & Fascia

What is fascia and soffit?

Fascia is the wood boards that are nailed to the wood rafter tails or your wood truss tails. Your gutters are anchored to the fascia boards. Fascia boards can either be painted or covered with aluminum. Soffit is the panels that enclose the area under the roof overhang between house wall and the fascia. Soffit panels can either be painted wood or aluminum. Your soffits are very important because they allow the intake of air flow necessary for proper attic ventilation. A properly ventilated attic will add years of life to your roof shingles.

The wood fascia and soffit on our house was painted many years ago, and needs repainted. Can they be replaced with the aluminum?

The wood does not need to be replaced unless it is damaged from rot or decay. Gutter Masters will make sure that you have proper attic ventilation before we cover the wood with aluminum fascia and soffit panels matching the color of your home.

The soffit panels on our home do not have venting in them. Is this a problem?

Yes the air space above the insulation in the attic needs to be vented all year. In the winter, un-vented attics can have mold growth. In the summer, un-vented attics build up excessive heat which will shorten the life expectancy of your shingles and makes the AC system work harder to cool your home. With the proper installation of vented soffit, vent baffles, and roof vents or vent-a-ridge, these problems will be taken care of.
